This wiki contains a list of software that will be used in the first semester of the first year by new students within the Applied Computer Science (Dutch: Toegepaste Informatica) at Howest University College. Follow the installation guide to be fully prepared. Please read everything carefully!

### Basic IT on campus
Within the ["Infosite Howest Brugge"](https://leho-howest.instructure.com/courses/14725) course on our learning management platform 'Leho', you'll find basic information about the wireless network, copying, printing, timetables, VPN connection etc.
**IMPORTANT** Installing/configuring most of the software in the next steps will only work if you have received an active and working Howest account. This means that you should be able to login to our learning platform ['Leho'](https://leho-howest.instructure.com/) and/or [Microsoft Office](https://www.office.com/) with your Howest credentials (e-mail/password).

If this is not the case, [follow the steps which are necessary for all students at Howest](https://www.howest.be/en/study/student-facilities/it-on-campus/kickoff). If you still encounter problems with this, try contacting the [IT helpdesk](https://www.howest.be/en/study/student-facilities/it-on-campus/helpdesk) of Howest.

## Howest VPN
Scroll down on [this page](https://www.howest.be/en/helpdesk) to "Other frequently asked ICT questions" > "1. How can I efficiently work from home (via VPN)?". Follow these instructions to install the Howest VPN. This software allows you to connect to infrastructure that would otherwise be inaccessible from home. Most things **will** be available from home. Follow the instructions of your teachers if and when you would need this VPN software, but by installing and configuring you are already a step closer.

## Howest GitLab
Within the Applied Computer Science -in Dutch: "Toegepaste Informatica (TI)"- at Howest, we use GitLab to host & manage Git projects (which are called 'repositories'). You can find it on [http://git.ti.howest.be/](http://git.ti.howest.be/). Keep this current browser-tab (or window) open but go in a new tab and try logging in with your credentials. Use your firstname.lastname and your password. **Once logged in come back here**.
**NOTE: do not use @student.howest.be at the end!**

If you have logged on the other window, press the 'F5' key on your keyboard to **refresh this page**. Now you should also be logged in in this tab. You can close the other window.

## Installation
In most cases we provide the official homepage of the software. That way you can get the latest version. If no extra information is provided follow the installation with all defaults enabled unless the software wants to install additional pieces of software. Read carefully what happens and don't go to fast! **Follow the steps in this order (new students can skip semester 3 & 5!)**
